  B Frostberg LSide.JPG - B FROSTBERG - Tin face lamp with rare marking diagonally top to bottom on font B FROSTBERG, double spout, 2 in. high to lid, unfired, ex-Tony Moon collection withnumber W267 on bottom [The rare marking of B FROSTBERG continues to be a mystery. Almost certainly the lamp was manufactured by tinsmith David P. Highberger since this lamp and the D P HIGHBERGER IRWIN PA lamp shown elsewhere in my pics are nearly identical. The HIGHBERGER and FROSTBERG markings are both diagonal down the font. A later D P HIGHBERGER WILKINSBURG PA lamp also shares all the same features. Highberger manufactured oil wick lamps from the mid-1880s into the very early 1900s and sold them through his hardware businesses in both Irwin first and later in Wilkinsburg. A considerable amount of research trying to identify the B FROSTBERG marking has resulted in a total lack of leads. Some have thought the marking may somehow apply to a misspelling of the town Frostburg, MD also known for oil wick lamps. Others conjecture that the misspelled marking may apply to Frostburg, PA some 75 miles northeast of Irwin. The lamp appears to be a private marking of a Highberger-made wick lamp but I fear only Mr. Highberger knows for sure what the marking means and he’s unavailable and has been for a long time.]
